I was in need of a quick fix, so a trip to Franconia seemed like it would take care of this need! Wendy could not go due to other plans but the weather was looking good for a morning hunt.

I was on the road at 5 am, expecting to arrive at the parking spot about 6:15am. This ends up to be a perfect time to start the hike into the strewn field. The sun is just coming up and the mountains near Kingman block the direct sunlight for a short period of time. However, if you are hunting by sight only, a little later arrival time would be better.

As I dropped into the wash, I noticed there were no other tracks since last week. At the parking spot, no one else had been there.

My plan was to head back to the area Wendy and I were at last hunt and continue to hunt this small area. I arrived there and hunted around for about an hour and I hit is this nice 14 gram Chondrite!

In Situ Franconia find 14.0g OC

I am sure glad I found that! I was getting worried I would skunk! I hunted around that area about another 30 minutes or so and decided to head toward Jason's Hill and hunt that area just South and East of there in the rock field. This is tough hunting as you use your eyes and the detector and pray that you do not twist an ankle! Of course I loose track of time out there, so I am not really sure how long I hunt in any area.

I ended up working a grid in this area for about an hour and it was getting warm. I knew I would have to start heading back. Not seeing or hearing anything I decided to throw my first find down (it's in a plastic bag) and swing over it just to tune up my hearing.

So I throw it down in a small clearing, about 1 foot square, and swing my detector over it. I was expecting to hear the typical Zip-Zip as I move back and forth over it.

I don't hear that!

To my surprise, I hear a zipzip-zipzip as I swing. I bend over to pick up the bag and sure enough.

I threw it on top of a meteorite!

How cool is that !!! What are the odds of ever doing that???

No doubt, I've never done that before and it made my day! Turned out of be a nice little 8.1g Chondrite! I was jazzed and it was time to head back to the truck. I swung all the way back and ended up digging 3ea. 50 cals and 1ea 30 cal but no more meteorites.

Got back to the truck at 11:30 and back on the road! for home!
